Was the original (conventional) kilogram a weight of something?

Question

We say kg is for mass and Newton is for weight, but was a kg originally the weight of smt when scientists defined it or could they get gravity out of the picture somehow?

  1. kg was never a weight ..unlike POUNDS kg is and always was a measure of MASS..

    W = ma

    So you can see that for weight you need to incorporate the ACCELERATION..

    That’s why astronauts in space have the same mass but different weights..
