If sun pulls earth..then why didnt earth falls into it?

Question

I know all would say since earth inst loosing energy as the angle of gravitational force and displacement is tangent i.e 90 degrees and as a consequence of equation work is FDcosø Is zero infacr…but we know orbit of earth isn’t circular at all its elliptical in fact..??isn’t it?

  1. You are correct when you say the orbit of the earth around the sun is elliptical. As the earth moves around the ellipse, the direction of its velocity is constantly changing. The force that causes this to happen is called the Universal gravitational force. One difference between an ellipse and a circle is that the radius is constantly changing. At any point on the ellipse, the centripetal force is equal the Universal gravitational force. This prevents the earth from moving toward the Sun. If this was not true, earth would have been destroyed millions of year ago.
