What Force Must You Pull

The tune-up specifications of a car call for the spark plugs to be tightened to a torque of 35 Nm. You plan to tighten the plugs by pulling on the end of a 21-cm-long wrench.Because of the cramped space under the hood, you’ll need to pull at an angle of 125° with respect to the wrench shaft.

With what force must you pull?

Known variables:

Torque(τ): 35 Nm

position r relative to its axis of rotation: 21 cm or .21m

Angle: 125°

To find the Force, you would need to derive from the torque equation.

τ = Frsinθ

Just solve for F, if you rearrange the equation, it would look a little something like this.

F= τ/rsinθ

F= 35/.21(   sin(125)  )

F= 203 N or200 N (two significant figures)

F= 200 N
