What is ionization?

Doesn’t it mean to electrically charge gas atoms? Aren’t electrically charged things described as “electrified”?

  1. Ionization is the process of creating ions. Ions are atoms that either have an excess of electrons (negative ions) or a dearth of them (positive ions).

    EX: The LHC at CERN passes hydrogen gas through a device that strips the one electron bonded to hydrogen and that results in a proton with a positive charge. That’s a positive ion.
