  1. How does a steel submarine float when it is in the harbor?

    To float, an object must be less dense than water. According to a table in my physics book, the density of iron is 7.86 * 10^3 kg/m^3. The density of water is 1 * 10^3 kg/m^3. The following equation is used to determine density.

    Density = Mass ÷ Total volume

    Only a fraction of volume of submarine is steel. Let’s assume its volume is 100 cubic meters. And only 10% o the volume is steel.

    Mass = 7.86 * 10^3 * 10 = 78,600 kg
    Density = 78,600 ÷ 100 = 786 kg/m^3
    This is less than the density of water. This is why large steel ships and submarine can float.
