During the time the ball is falling, its velocity increases at the rate of 9.8 m/s each second. Since the ball is dropped, its initial velocity is 0 m/s. Let’s use the following equation to determine the time.
d = vi * t + ½ * a * t^2, vi = 0
153.7 = ½ * 9.8 * t^2
t = √(153.7 ÷ 4.9)
This is approximately 5.6 seconds. Let’s use the following equation to determine its velocity just before it hits the ground.
vf = vi + a * t, vi = 0
vf = 9.8 * √(153.7 ÷ 4.9)
This is approximately 54.9 m/s.
